Levi Strauss :: essays research papers

Loeb Strauss, whose name was later changed to Levi, was born on February 26, 1829, in Buttenheim Bavaria in Germany. He was born to his Jewish parents Hirsch Strauss and his second wife, Rebecca Haas Strauss. His father, was a dry goods peddler who traveled around the country selling dry goods. Hirsch Strauss had five other children Jacob, Jonas, Louis, Rosla and Mathilde from his first wife, who had died several years earlier. Loeb and his older sister Fanny were the two children Hirsch had with his second wife. In 1845 Hirsch died of tuberculosis. After this, the already poor Strauss family became much poorer because there was no income. At this time two of Levi’s older brothers Jonas and Louis left for America. Two years later, Rebecca and the other children left on a boat for New York. When Levi got to New York, he was taught the ways of pedaling by his brothers, who had already started a dry goods business called J. Strauss Brother & Co. In 1848 Levi moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he sold goods from his brother's store. In 1853 he returned to New York upon hearing gold had been discovered in California. He persuaded his two brothers to provide him with a supply of silk, cloth, and a few luxury items, which he planned to sell in San Francisco. He also took a supply of canvas, which he intended to use to make tents, and wagon covers to sell to prospectors who were crossing the continent. In January of 1853 Levi became a United States citizen, and by March of the same year he arrived in San Francisco, by the time he landed, Levi had sold all his goods to passengers on the ship except for the canvas. When Levi Strauss got to San Francisco, he opened up a dry goods store under his own name representing his family’s New York firm. The name of his firm was "Levi Strauss." At this time the companies main products were the dry goods shipped to it from New York, but this was about to change. While here, a local miner asked if he sold pants. Levi, being a keen business man, decided to make pants from the rolls of canvas originally brought over to make tents, Levi’s were born. When Levi ran out of canvas, his brothers sent him a new fabric called denim.

George Orwell, 1984 Essay

The introduction of the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four says it all. It cannot be denied that control is present in the society. A few sentences in the first paragraph: â€Å"On each landing, opposite the lift shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran (Orwell 2). † How do you feel when you keep being reminded that someone is looking after you? Or, to be more politically correct, having you under surveillance? The introduction of the book is about Winston Smith who gets inside his London apartment. The tone of the introductory sentences is depressing and dark. The living conditions are undeniably squalid. In this part, it was clear that Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia are the three superpowers that divide the world into pieces. Oceania is where Winston Smith came from (Orwell 1). These superpowers are never in good terms with each other. Because of the wartime conditions that seem constant in the environment and the nature of the countries, the people of Oceania are always repressed. The conditions brought about by war caused the government of Oceania to let its people suffer through repression. The people are always monitored. Surveillance is as common as eating. The party members, however, are not always given enough supply. There is also a private rebellion taking place because the government was no longer humane. In this private rebellion, Winston Smith is a member of the Outer Party. Winston is writing in his diary every single day. Because this decision is crucial, he accepted that what goes with private rebellion is doing some forbidden steps. He has to do forbidden steps because he is serving a party that he did not want to serve (Orwell 2). He buys the diary which was part of the things confiscated during a raid into the proletariats. He meets a young lady outside the shop where he purchased the diary, and he noticed that it is the same girl who keeps on eyeing at him for a few days. Because Winston started feeling that he should be there, and because he felt that the woman was spying on him, he immediately tries to stay away from her (Orwell 2). With this introduction, it clearly shows how totalitarianism has ruled the world. Nineteen Eight-Four is a novel that shows negative utopia. It cannot be denied that totalitarianism was at its most rigid. Totalitarianism was the kind of power used to execute total control of the people (Ellis and Reed, 2008). Orwell had been successful in representing control, in which he introduced through an entity referred to as Big Brother. This has four branches. One is called the Ministry of Love, in which law enforcement is done. The other is called Ministry of Plenty, where economic affairs and issues are handled. The Ministry of Peace is what takes charge of the war taking place in the country and around the world. The Ministry of Truth is the one that manages the dissemination of propaganda. Without the Ministry of Truth, the printed materials and other things needed for administering propaganda won’t be equally distributed. These four ministries make up the government (Ellis and Reed 2). Meanwhile, Winston Smith does not conform to this ideology. This idea is spoon-fed to him, with the concept of Big Brother being used. The government is feeding him with unnecessary things and ideas that he, himself, knows he does not need. Going back to the life of George Orwell, it can be seen that he reflects the character in his novel. George Orwell, like Winston Smith, has the same aesthetic and social characteristics. They both have the same political perceptions. This may be the reason why the novel is undeniably an excellent one, because he could write it as easily as writing his own thoughts, beliefs and feelings. He wrote excellently the representation of control in just simple paragraphs like: â€Å"Behind Winston’s back the voice from the telescreen was still babbling away about pig-iron and the overfulfilment of the Ninth Three-Year Plan. The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard (Orwell 8). † In the novel, there was clearly no way of being aware about how an individual is being watched. If an individual had to make a sound, someone will always hear it. If an individual is in the dark, then he or she can be safe. But if it is bright out there, then there is no chance that the movement of the individual is monitored and fully observed (Orwell 8). The practice of control as a way of administering power was done through television surveillance in the novel. Security cameras are everywhere. Just about any spot, a speed camera will be seen. The citizens were disturbed, and especially Winston Smith, because the people were not free and they were no longer happy with their lives of what the government was doing to them. In a more physical point of view, George Orwell wrote the following to give the audience a better picture of how the government, in the novel, had controlled and repressed the people (Ellis and Reed 2). The political perceptions of George Orwell are shown through Winston Smith. Aside from Orwell’s perception of politics, he also showed his disbelief, or skepticism, rather, of mass media, through the character of Winston Smith. It is no surprise that George Orwell was skeptic of the media because he has spent some of his time working for BBC, also known as the British Broadcasting Company. By working for BBC, he was able to see how information was distorted before it is distributed to the public (Ellis and Reed 2). The information they got were not presented as is on television. He was aware as he witnessed how propaganda was distorted. Because of his experience in working for a mass media outfit, he knew that whatever the public was getting from the television, the radio and the newspapers were not at all completely true (Ellis and Reed 2). Other information and important facts were omitted before news is aired. Now, he came up with the novel to let the public know what is happening behind authorities, and how much control is being executed before the public gets what it gets (Ellis and Reed 2). Control, in this novel, is clearly represented because it does not state that control is destroying the society just because it is there. The novel Nineteen Eighty-Four clearly suggests that the government, or the state as a whole, is there to manipulate everything. Individuals in the society are being controlled by the state, and control is employed on the information being released to the public. In the novel, the â€Å"telescreen† is a constant object. The telescreen, in the novel, is a tool for control. Everyone needs to have a telescreen. It is a dominant item in any household in London, especially in Airstrip One, the capital city, which used to be referred to as England. Aside from the telescreen, other ways are used to employ power and a quote from the book is here to show it, â€Å"There will be no love, except the love of BIG BROTHER. There will be no laughter, except the laugh of triumph over a defeated enemy. There will be no art, no literature, no science. There will be no distinction between beauty and ugliness. There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life† (Orwell 238). Indeed, the state, just like in today’s society, aims to reshape the minds of the people. Whatever is happening in the novel of George Orwell does not end there. It continues and is widely seen in our society today. Out society, through the television, convert our minds into what the government or the media thinks we should think about. The theories of mass media are there to help us understand that for the media to sell, they need to create something interesting for our eyes. We need to see controversies. With all these, we learn to create our sides. Creating our sides is never pure anymore because even before we learn to form our opinion, the media and the state already manipulates the information given to use. The tools we use to shape our minds when it comes to our thoughts on the elections, the issues on war and terror, and economic crisis, are shaped by a higher power by using control.

Different Reseach Domains Within Journalism Study

Different Reseach Domains within Journalism Study By James Xu 21503974 Introduction Journalism is the product of the rise of media industry in more recent years. As journalism and social life is inextricably linked together, it has tremendous impacts on social, political, economic, cultural and many other fields in people’s daily life. Scholars in various fields of journalism and study named this relationship as â€Å"the medium of the ecological environment† Scholars tend to look from different angles and then focused their attention on a more thorough level, and build their own theoretical point of view or ideological system. This is what is known as the research domain. The research domain is clearly different from the scientific paradigm in the study of journalism research. But it does affect the direction of the development of journalism and limits the content of journalism study and research, And even lead to theoratical debate between researchers. For instance, how to look at the relationship between the media and the government or ruling party? News organizations what should be the cause of the nature or corporate nature? Is the form of media is less important than the actual content? Is it true that the content media determines its form? Circulation and ratings can not be used as a standard to determine the medium of the pros and cons? Are the governments allowing to meet the citizensâ€Å" rights to know †, the reporter s right to coverage? Or they just intended to

The well-organized ripping away of respect and affection is called, emotional [bullying] (Deal.org 1). Emotional bullying can be as simple as ignoring the person’s feelings, not listening, forcing the victim to do something they would not normally do, and by laying a guilt trip on the victims backs to manipulate that person to do what the bully want (Deal.org 1). â€Å"Emotional [bullying] leaves the victim with hidden scars that often result in insecurity, poor self-esteem,Show MoreRelatedBullying And Bullying At School983 Words   |  4 PagesWhen I was a young girl and I would discuss bullying with my parents I always told â€Å"You never let anyone bully you or put their hands on you†. In Jane Austen’s Persuasion love and family is a major thing I learned to see and control just because of this book. Jane Austen is a very interesting woman. She is 7 out of 8 kids. Her sister and her Cassandra were very close. Both had plenty of chances of marring and having a family. By 25, she had written 3 books, Persuasion not being one of them. She had written her last book in 1818, Persuasion. In my eyes Jane was a normal England girl. She was homed school, had a big loving family, and perused her dream. She didn’t get the respect she deserved, but did write pretty good books. Jane passed away July 18. 1817, she died of Addison’s disease which is a deadly disease. Soon her health became bad; she had gotten Addison’s disease. Her grave site never gave her props of being an author. Persuasion and Northanger Abby were published in December 1817. Henery gave her a â€Å"biographical notice† saying she was the author of all these great books. (Sutherland) Some love her some hate her, but Jane Austen is actually loved by many. Some call her a heroine and a heroine is a woman admired of idealized for her courage, outstand achievements, or noble qualities. She just might be a hero to some people. She is very relevant because she talks about stuff that people go through till this day. Like love, money, friendship, and family. I’ve read a lot of websites and they all say she writes with a great sense of irony, humor, and realism. She had real life characters, and real life situations. Who wouldn’t love an author lik e that who talks about stuff that we are going through, plus she died in 1817. Like people went through what we did almost 200 hundred years ago! My Autobiography Persuasive Essay Example For Students

My Autobiography Persuasive Essay It was a normal Sunday morning, the weather was good and church had just finished. We were all having coffee and then it struck me. There were lots of people in the Micklem hall, and they were all being given a booklet. I wandered over there with a few friends to try and see what they were doing. Then I saw it. The front cover of the booklet they had. It had a weird name. At first I didnt understand. Why was it called Stanmore Scenes? I knew we were in Stanmore but I didnt realise why you would call something Stanmore Scenes. Even so it wasnt until later that I would understand more about it. That evening my mum had a phone call from her sister. This helped me to find out what she and the others had been doing earlier that day. When I found out I was extremely confused. I didnt think my Aunty could act! I didnt even think it was possible for the church I went to, to put on a play about its life. It was mad. How could they put 150 years of history into a couple of hours? Was it possible to do? Anyway none of my friends were in it so why would I want to be in it, it was mad. So my friend Sarah and I decided we would leave them to it. After that Sarah and I soon forgot about Stanmore Scenes. All until one day a few weeks later at school. We were all told about this play being put on at St. Johns church. We were also told that our school, St. Johns C of E middle school would be singing at it. That week there were auditions, to check we could sing, in order to join the choir that would be singing in Stanmore Scenes. All my friends had gone through the audition to join the choir for the carol service, however I didnt like singing so hadnt joined the choir with them. When it was the new auditions I didnt want to go as I was on my own. Go on Charlotte, they all said, it doesnt matter if you dont pass. This really knocked my confidence as I dont like singing on my own. I cant, I cant, I said desperately, I cant sing on my own. So as I couldnt bring myself to join the choir my friends took part without me! Around came Sunday again and I had the shock of my life. After church my Aunty came up to me. Charlotte, she said excitedly, do you want to be part of Stanmore Scenes? I was gob smacked! Why would she ask me? Anyway I accepted the offer. I went into the hall with her and everyone stopped talking. We sat down. Then Janet started to address everyone. Today we will go through the play and make sure everyone knows their part, Janet calmly told us. So I was given a script and we went through the play. I was given a part. It was when the local boys went off to war and their families were left behind. There were about six families and mine was two parents a brother and me. When the men were brought back by nurses all but my brother returned. They said he must be dead and we had to get upset and walk off with the nurses. I went to practice after practice. These were every Sunday. Then after a month we started having practices in the church so we could work out the best way to get on and off stage. People came from the back, sides and front. When we had all sorted coming on and off stage we ran through the play again. Shortly after a few weeks of more exhausting and long practices in church we tried on costumes. It took ages! This doesnt fit, came the comments. I cant wear this! exclaimed another. Yuck this is horrid! was said in disgust. Eventually it was all sorted and everyone had a costume. We all settled down and were told Stanmore Scenes was being put on 3 nights in July. .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985 , .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985 .postImageUrl , .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985 , .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985:hover , .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985:visited , .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985:active { border:0!important; } .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985:active , .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985 .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u05e3c2e1e80f5b0ce54e1df4b6429985:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Nelson Mandela EssayThis was the 11th, 12th and 13th July 2000. The week of the churchs 150th birthday! We had 2 weeks left to prepare, in which we would have 2 more practices together one of which was to be a dress rehearsal. The day of the dress rehearsal came. We all had some make up on (even the men) to make our eyes stand out,0 so people at the back could see our faces better. When we were all ready we started. My part was very short and in the middle of the play therefore I had to wait a long time until I came on. At the end we sang 2 songs as everyone would come onto the stage and bow. This is where my school would come in. They would be at the back of the stage singing with us. After the rehearsal we all clambered out of the costumes and back into our own clothes. When we were out of our costumes they collected them all in and left them in the tower room. We were all told to practice hard, so that we knew all our lines off by heart and to come 1 hour before the start to become transformed. After the rehearsal my Aunty took me home. She said, See you on Tuesday Charlotte, then left me with my mum. At school on Monday I told my friends that I was going to be in Stanmore Scenes after all. They all exclaimed, How come, if your not in the choir?

Sexism Essays - Gender, Disputes In English Grammar, Discrimination

Sexism Sexism has always been a problem in Western society. It has been a problem that many people overlook, simply because they think it does not actually exist! However, sexism is present in our current society today, and is proved perfectly by Alleen Nilsen in her quote stating, ?Anyone living in the United States who listens with a keen ear or reads with a perceptive eye can come up with startling new insights about the way American English reflects our values.? Every society has certain common beliefs regarding the ways each sex should behave. In Western society, for example women have traditionally been considered more tender and sympathetic than men have. Men have been regarded as more competitive and not as emotional as women have. Our language supports this outdated view today. Although feminists tend to be the only people fighting against sexism, this false ideology needs to be changed. People need to become more sociological in their thinking and realize this is a problem that we all should be working to fix. Being of the female gender myself, I understand this problem fully through experiences in my own life. The two main reasons I feel this ideology needs to be changed is: females no longer should have to contend with these outdated stereotypes set up decades ago, and men should not feel any intimidation for their roles becoming more sensitive or caring as individuals. Basically, I feel that as cultural changes have taken place, the language that molds us as youngsters and adults, needs to reflect the new attitudes toward the roles of men and women today in society. Everyone, from infancy on, learns what the accepted sexual role should be for his or her gender. Growing up, I can remember, family members playing rough with my brother, and gently and cuddly with me. My father would watch and see the disappointment in my face, come over, toss me in the air just to let me know I could be tough and play rough too. I was a little ?tomboy'; the word in itself signifies a sexist word. The definition of this type of girl was the girl that runs around wild, basically acts more masculine than what is considered appropriate for a little girl. Although I never liked this word, I was often referred as this type of girl. I found this quite offensive, probably because of my upbringing. From the minute I can remember my father and mother, taught me to be strong, self-sufficient and think things out more logically and less emotionally, or like society deems, more masculine. People would always say, ?She should be wearing more dresses, sitting more ladylike, I sho uld not talk so tough, or get into so many arguments with boys. Many felt that girls shouldn't play with the boys so much. I found this quite confusing. I thought I was doing nothing wrong, but as I got older I discovered that society did see differences in men and women besides their physique. Since I was a girl, society expected me to act certain way. I was suppose to be less aggressive and more submissive, not have strong opinions, be considered weak and needing a man to help me do things no matter how simple they were. I have refused to yield to such criteria, and am quite happy being the independent woman that I am today, that very same little girl someone called a ?tomboy'! Roles in society have become increasingly flexible. Men and women can hold jobs once considered inappropriate for their gender, however the language that surrounds us does not support this view. Men are just as subjected to sexism by society and need to fight for the changes to occur. As stated by Nilsen, ?If a boy has a name that society considers to be girlish, they often become self-conscious, and either go by abbreviated names or change their names.? My brother's middle name is Loren and is a perfect example of this sad fact. When he began school, all of a sudden his name became an issue. The other children decided what was considered to be an acceptable or unacceptable name. Loren was unacceptable for a boy. The children would tease
